#101: Understanding verbs: volerci

Did you know that by combining the pronoun, ci, with the third person singular or plural of volere (vuole or vogliono, respectively) that the meaning becomes:

  • to take time
  • to require (can also mean to need, but in the sense that you require it)

This is an impersonal expression that can used to say what one needs or how much time is required for something. It is used in third person single and plural only. Not sure when to use vuole or vogliono? The noun that follows determines the number of the verb used. See the examples below:

  • Ci vogliono due ore per fare i compiti.
It takes two hours to do the homework.
  • Ci vuole una nuova macchina perché la mia vecchia si è rotta.
I require a new car because my old one broke.
literally: A new car is required because my old one broke.
