#109: Prepositional phrases / Locuzioni prepositive

In this lesson, we’ll learn about the prepositional phrases. Prepositional phrases are the third member of the preposition family. These follow this pattern:

preposition + noun + another preposition + (noun/pronoun)

REMEMBER: Many prepositional phrases when used without the last preposition function as adverbs (for example: di fronte = adverb / di fronte a = prepositional phrase).

Here is a common list of them with their meaning in English (with some examples):

  • a causa di because of

    Era difficile andare in macchina a casa a causa della pioggia.
    It was difficult to drive home because of the rain.

  • a danno di to the detriment of

    Ha continuato a fumare a danno della sua salute.
    He continued to smoke to the detriment of his health.

  • a favore di in favor of

    I politici sono a favore della legge.
    The politicians are in favor of the law.

  • a fronte di against
  • a proposito di with regard to; on the subject of
  • a prescindere da apart from
  • a seguito di following up on
  • al di la di on the other side of
  • da parte di from; from the side of one’s family tree
  • di fronte a in front of; opposite

    La stazione si trova di fronte al parco.
    The station is in front of the park.

  • in base a on the basis of
  • in cambio di in exchange for
  • in cima a on top of
  • in compagnia di in the company of
  • in confronto a compared with
  • in merito a with regard to
  • in mezzo a in the middle of
  • in seguito a on account of
  • per mezzo di by means of; through
  • per opera di by means of
  • per via di on account of; owing to
