#152: Condizionale presente / Present conditional
Il condizionale presente (present conditional) is equivalent to the English would + verb. The conditional is formed along similar lines to the future, where the final -e of the infinitive is dropped and the endings are added. Below is the verb, parlare, conjugated in the conditional. Notice that the -a in the infinitive ending changes to an -e:-Ere and -ire verbs drop the -e in the infinitive and add the appropriate endings, as provided in the examples below: prendere and servire:
Here are some important points to remember when conjugating verbs in the conditional:
- The same irregulars in the future are irregular in the conditional, as the stems of the verb remain the same — only the endings of the verb are different.
- Verbs that end in -care, -gare, ciare, giare and -sciare have the same spelling change considerations as the future in order to maintain the pronuncation of the verb the same:
giocare (c becomes ch)
giocherei, giocheresti, giocherebbe, giocheremmo, giochereste, giocherebberopagare (g becomes gh)
pagherei, pagheresti, pagherebbe, pagheremmo, paghereste, pagherebberoaccorciare (the -i of the infinitive is omitted in the conjugation)
